How to read a supplement label
Serving size, % RDA, blends, FSSAI number: how to check what's really inside a supplement in under a minute.
16 October 2026 · 3 min read
Supplement packs are full of big promises. The label on the back is where the facts are. Here's how to read one in under a minute.
1. Serving size
Start here. Every amount on the label is per serving, so check whether a serving is one gummy, two capsules or a full scoop. A product that looks strong may need three servings a day to deliver what's on the front.
2. Amount per serving
Every active ingredient should have an exact amount, in mg or mcg. Words like "enriched with" or "contains" without a number tell you very little.
3. % RDA
RDA stands for Recommended Dietary Allowance: how much of a nutrient most healthy people need each day. In India, it's set by ICMR (ICMR-NIN 2020). 100% RDA means one serving covers the daily requirement. A higher number isn't always better; for most vitamins, steady daily intake matters more than mega-doses. Herbs such as ashwagandha have no RDA, so labels mark them with a symbol like †.
4. Proprietary blends
A "proprietary blend" lists ingredients under one combined weight without saying how much of each is inside. That makes it impossible to know whether you're getting a meaningful amount. Prefer labels that list every ingredient separately.
5. FSSAI licence number
Every nutraceutical and health supplement sold in India must show a 14-digit FSSAI licence number, along with the manufacturer's and marketer's details. You can look the number up on the FSSAI FoSCoS website.
6. Who it's for, and who should check first
A good label says who the product suits, how and when to take it, and who should speak to a doctor first, such as pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, or people on regular medication.
7. Veg mark, allergens and additives
Look for the green dot on vegetarian products, a clear allergen statement, and what is used for colour and sweetness. Gummies set with pectin instead of gelatin are suitable for vegetarians.
8. Batch number and expiry
Check the batch number and best-before date on every pack. Store supplements in a cool, dry place with the lid closed.
The fine print matters
Nutraceuticals in India must say they are not for medicinal use. They support everyday nutrition; they aren't medicines and shouldn't replace treatment your doctor has prescribed.
